Summer in Australia is all about BBQs, the beach, friends, family and an iced cold beer…but as we enjoy the festive season we never enjoy the growing waist line from the ’empty calories’ consumed from an iced cold beer or a glass of champagne and the lack of exercise as the festive season rolls on.
I’m not for a minute suggesting you do the entire summer counting your calories but I would like to create a little bit of awareness so your journey back to fitness isn’t as painful as it has been in the past.
So the sad facts are that calories from alcohol have no nutritional value as they only contain traces of vitamins and minerals but not in any significant contribution to “add” value. So when we are sitting around enjoying an alcoholic drink at the BBQ, down the beach, lifting a glass of champagne because it’s summer or having a lazy glass of red for dinner your body reduces the amount of fat that is usually burnt for energy. WHY, because we can’t store alcohol like we can store carbohydrates, fats and protein so our body wants to get rid of it and doing so making it a priority. All the other processes that should be taking place (including absorbing nutrients & burning fat) are interrupted.
So what are your options? Either exercise more or drink less but at the very least try to eat as healthy as possible to combat the liquid calories you are enjoying over the festive season. Remember alcohol is high in sugar which means alcohol contains lots of calories. 7 calories a gram.
Here are a few comparisons depending on your beverage selection.
1 BEER 182 calories = 18minutes running
1 GLASS OF RED 159 calories = 16minutes of running
1 GLASS OF CHAMPAGNE 86 calories = 10 minutes running
1 SPIRIT ON THE ROCKS = 6 minutes of running
Simple fact: the more you drink, the more you need to run…
